The Plainview Pirates Post 148 Senior Legion baseball team wrapped up its regular season over the past week with four tough losses. The Pirates went 0-4 during the past week, with two games on Thursday, July 18 and two on Sunday, July 21. These were the final four regular-season games on the schedule for Plainview, who is set to compete in the Class C Area 2 tournament from Friday, July 26 through Wednesday, July 31. Senior Legion Baseball wraps up regular season

Pirate Volleyball hosted a youth camp with over 40 attendees on Monday & Tuesday, July 15-16 in the Pirate Gym at Plainview High School. Each day included two sessions, one for 1-3 grades and one for 3-6. Skills taught by the high school athletes included passing and setting fundamentals, serving technique and, of course, some competition.

On 7-3-2024 at approx. 0915 hours the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office arrested Travis R. Hofmann, 36 years of age, of rural Plainview, NE on a charge of Theft by Deception $5000+ a Class IIA Felony. Hofmann who operates a feedyard on 536th Ave. in rural Plainview, Pierce County, NE was allegedly billing the owner of the cattle, Fred Co Inc of Holstein, IA for corn not being fed to the approximately 1800 head of cattle located at the feedyard. The investigation revealed that Fred Co Inc was billed and paid for 67,959.15 bushels of corn for a total of $407,075.30, which was not being fed. Hofmann was arrested by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and is currently being jailed at the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. More information will be coming as documents are filed.

Submitted Article The heart of Plainview is set to blossom this year with a vibrant new initiative spearheaded by the City of Plainview. A downtown flower basket sponsorship program is inviting community members, organizations, and businesses to play a part in enhancing the city’s aesthetic appeal. Thanks to a KENO grant, 24 H2O water-saving baskets have been purchased, each equipped with a 2.5-gallon reservoir and utilizing water-retaining polymers in the soil. These innovative baskets require watering only once every six days, making them both beautiful and environmentally friendly. The Importance of Downtown Beautification Downtown beautification is more than just an aesthetic enhancement; it’s a catalyst for social and economic growth. A vibrant downtown attracts visitors, encourages local pride, and fosters a sense of community. It can also lead to increased foot traffic for businesses, higher property values, and a more attractive environment for potential investors. Plainview’s commitment to downtown revitalization is evident in the numbers. Over the past 13 years, the city has received $775,000 in grants for downtown beautification projects. In the last 6 years alone, 23 downtown buildings have been sold, and the community has welcomed 30 new business owners. Those business owners have invested thousands of dollars in matching funds for Downtown Revitalization (DTR) grants, leading to improvements such as new windows, doors, roofs, and signage. Early voting applications available for general election From the Secretary of State Beginning today, July 8, county election offices are accepting early voting applications for the general election. A Nebraska voter can either download the early voting application from the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website, or they can request an application from their county election office. The November 5, 2024, election will be Nebraska’s first general election with voter ID. The new general election early voting applications have a section for voter ID information. A Nebraska voter can write down their Nebraska driver’s license or Nebraska state ID number, or they can enclose a photocopy of an acceptable ID with their early voting application. The voter should make sure to sign and return the early voting application to their county election office. Once a county election office approves the early voter’s application and has accepted the ID information, the voter ID requirement is fulfilled. “County election officials are prepared to help voters easily navigate the early voting process,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said. “As we saw in the primary election, Nebraska voters understood the new voter ID law, and county election officials were ready to address any questions and concerns. Our office looks to repeat the smooth voter ID process for the general election.” Voter ID in by-mail counties and precincts By-mail counties will automatically send ballots to their registered voters. A voter in a by-mail county or by-mail precinct does not need to complete an early voting application. Instead, the voter will present their photo ID information when returning their ballot. Counties that vote completely by mail include Boone, Cedar, Cherry, Clay, Dawes, Dixon, Garden, Knox, Merrick, Morrill and Stanton. Counties that have by-mail precincts include Cuming, Hamilton, Harlan, Nance, Phelps, Richardson, Thayer and Wayne. A voter in a by-mail county or by-mail precinct will either write their driver’s license or state ID number under the flap of their return envelope, or they can enclose a photocopy of their photo ID in the return envelope. The envelope flap will shield their ID information. A birth certificate is not a valid form of voter ID. Voter ID resources Nebraskans can learn more about the new voter ID law at voterID.nebraska.gov. Red Cross drive on July 17 The FFA Red Cross Blood Drive will be held Wednesday, July 17, at Plainview High School from 12:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. A goal of 45 collected units has been set by the Red Cross. To donate, appointments are preferred to be made online at www.redcrossblood.org or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App on your phone. Walk-ins may be allowed the day of the drive with permission of the Red Cross Drive Coordinator if there is a current opening. However, appointments are preferred. A celebratory meal was enjoyed at Serendipity Wednesday noon to mark the 50th anniversary of the Wednesday morning Bible class of Zion Lutheran Church. The Bible class was started in 1974 at the home of Carolyn Buss by Mary Brandt, wife of the pastor serving Zion at that time. It has continued since that time with approximately 12 members in any given year. Darlene Stelling read a history of the class, including many members who have moved or passed away. There are eight members at this time including: Janyce Warneke, Shirley Wacker, Mary Friedrich, Bev Ziems, Julie Claussen, Darlene Stelling, Jeannie Oltjenbruns and Carol Hall.

The 2024 Men’s Open at the Plainview Country Club was held last weekend with golfers of all ages, skill and home courses. A number of local golfers were in the “tip-top” of the roster, competing and placing in the Championship flight and President’s flight. Sam Meuret took the top honors this year with first-place and a score of 142 over the two day tournament. Sean O’Neill took second with a 142 as well; Thomas Harmon was third with 147; Andrew Arndorfer was fourth with 147; Matt Meuret placed again in fifth with 148 and Mitch Todd was sixth with 148 as well. Spencer Hille stepped on the gridiron to represent the Plainview Pirates at the 47th annual Sertoma 8-Man All Star Game on Saturday, June 15 on Lloyd Wilson Field at Hastings College. Hille competed in the prestigious contest as a member of the East Squad. He was joined by some of the best eight-man players in eastern Nebraska, including players from recent State Championship-winning teams such as Stanton and Clarkson-Leigh.
