October 2nd was the final day of the Plainview Farmers Market for the 2024 season, complete with an honors and Awards presentation was held at noon. The vendors presented market manager, Dick Haskin, with a Casey’s gift certificate, cash, and card for his service to the Plainview Farmers Market. This was Haskin’s final year as manager of the market. Chad Kment will be stepping in to manage the market next year.

Downtown Trick or Treating will again be hosted by the Plainview Chamber of Commerce this year. On October 31 from 5-6:30 p.m. Locust Avenue will be closed to through traffic from Elm Street to King Street, and Main Street will be closed from Highway 20 to Locust Avenue. All businesses and organizations in Plainview are invited to participate. Bring a table and set up on the sidewalks along Locust Avenue or Main Street. The Plainview Pirates found heartbreak for the second time this season in a tough loss to the Summerland Bobcats in a top ten matchup on Friday, Sept. 27 in Plainview. Entering the contest, both teams boasted records of 3-1 and both were ranked inside the top ten in Nebraska High School Football Class D1 standings. Summerland entered the game as the fifth-ranked team, while Plainview stood tall at number eight.

The Plainview play production team has held auditions and is getting ready to take the stage for the 2024 season. After a successful 2023 season that ended with Plainview performing at the Johnny Carson Theater in Norfolk, the Pirates play production squad is gearing up for another fun-filled year that hopefully goes as smooth as last season.

The Plainview Lady Pirates volleyball team improved their season record to 5-6 after going 1-1 this past week in matchups with Wausa and Laurel-Concord- Coleridge (LCC). In their most recent contest of the week, the Pirates took on the 14-2 LCC Bears in Plainview on Thursday, Sept. 19.

The Plainview Pirate Marching band traveled to Norfolk last Saturday morning to take part in the annual Norfolk Lions Club parade. Under the direction of instructor Wynter Fulsaas, the band marched through downtown and back up to the Norfolk High School. To cap off the day, the Pirates were notified that they had also won second place in the Class D competition.

A freshman at Plainview High School, Adryck Stewart, has been invited to participate in a wrestling event in Bahrain in the Middle East. Stewart would be representing the United States Team at the tournament, and the trip will take him overseas from October 19 to November 1. As part of the offer, he’s required to raise funding to help pay expenses for his trip, which will take him 7,292 miles (according to Google) to the country, which is located just off the coast of Saudi Arabia to the east in the Persian Gulf. The Pirate Boosters are organizing efforts to help raise the funds, and donations can be sent to Toby King at 447 4th St., Brunswick, NE 68720.

Stewart picked for US tourney in Bahrain
The Plainview Pirates, coaches and student-athletes, were honored with a special presentation at the home volleyball games on Thursday, Sept. 12 – the presentation of the “Buckle Up, Phone Down” Cup Class D trophy. Former Plainview educator and head football coach, and now Nebraska School Activities Association Associate Director, Jeff Johnson, was present to hand over the Cup trophy to the student body and administration.

The Pirates welcomed the Cardinals of South Sioux City to the home gym on Tuesday, Sept. 3 and the Cardinals took the five set victory with them. Coach Kim Miller commented “This was a tough one, but one that we need to learn from. The team is working hard, we just have to remember to compete for every point, and during every rep. The staff, administration and families at the Plainview Manor celebrated Grandparents Day last week. More than 75 were reported to attend the event and share time with their loved ones. A meal was provided by the Manor, and donations were received from various local sponsors for raffle and door prizes to give away.

The Plainview Board of Education has planned a special meeting for the proposed adoption of the 2024-25 budget this year. On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Board will gather at the high school media center at 5 p.m. to open a series of meetings, over a scheduled time of just 15 minutes, to discuss and review the proposed budget, tax request and then have a special meeting with the intent to pass the budget and tax request.

The Pierce County 4-H Shooting Club hosted its first-ever official competition this past weekend on Saturday, Sept. 7 just south of Plainview. The event was held at the Thomsen farm, owned by Gene and Velma Thomsen, longtime shooting club instructors and sponsors – and conducted with a host of volunteers, including both the Thomsen’s children, now fully grown with kids of their own, David Thomsen and Kristi Anderson. Three Plainview Educators Rising members and adviser Ronita Jacobsen joined ESUs 6 and 9 in their Pilot Program and Student Kickoff for Course I Introduction to Teaching as a Profession. The kickoff was held in Milford at Southeast Community College in the Welsh Center with close to 100 students attending from almost 20 schools. Members attending from Plainview were senior Shayla Jacobsen and juniors Trindan Ziems and Mallory Mauer. Member Emma Sauser was marching with the band at the state fair and unable to attend that day.

The Plainview Pirates football team kicked off its season on Friday, Aug. 30 with a contest against the Pender Pendragons in Pender. After a successful 2023 season which featured an undefeated regular season, the Pirates entered the 2024 season with a tough week one opponent in the Pendragons, who finished the 2023 season with a regular season record of 5-3.

Plainview FCCLA will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Wednesday, September 18, from 9 am–3 pm at Plainview High School Tartan Gym. For more information or to make an appointment to donate, call 402-582-4991 or sign up online at redcrossblood.org or through the Red Cross App. 40 donations is the goal for the drive set by the Red Cross, which is a huge but achievable goal for the community.
